Course Expectations and Guidelines
Week 1 (Introduction to the Internet and its Resources)
Each participant will be required to create a Web Quest and accompanying Lesson Plan from templates.  These templates are on floppy disks. 

The Web Quests and Lesson Plans that you create will be uploaded to the Internet for the benefit of students and teachers world wide.

To successfully complete the course you must attend regularly and create your Web Quest and accompanying  Lesson Plan ready to be uploaded to the Internet.

Things You Will Learn: 
 
  • Windows 95 Basics (Navigating the desktop including your floppy disk)
  • Windows 95 and Macintosh similarities and differences
  • Learning the difference between "Save" and "Save As"
  • Make a short cut to the Floppy A Drive on your desktop
  • Open and explore the contents of your your floppy disk.  The Course bookmarks are on your floppy disk in the Save Here Folder
  • Learn how to create a Save Here Folder on your desktop
  • Learn how to save bookmarks and graphics and HTML files to the correct folders in your Save Here Folder on your desktop.  It is much quicker to use the Save Here Folder on your Desktop and then drag and drop it to your floppy disk to save any changes you have made.
  • Learn how to back up your work from the Save Here Folder on your desktop to the Save Here Folder on your floppy disk.  Do this at the end of each session.
  • Learn how to use Netscape Communicator (Basic functions) 
  • Take a Guided tour showing variety of resources available on the Internet 
  • Explore the UCI Internet Course Web Site:

  • Learn how to save your bookmarks to your Save Here Folder 





  • Set up a Free Web Based E-mail account on Hotmail (Having a valid Web Based E-mail address is a requirement of this course)
  • Learn how to find useful science websites without using search engines.
  • Learn how to use several search engines to find resources.
  • Learn how to save graphics from the Web. (Right click on the image you want)
  • Learn how to Cut or Copy and  Paste just about anything.
  • Highlight what you want to Cut or Copy and  Paste.  Click on the Edit pull down menu on toolbar and choose the command you want.
  • Copying URL addresses is the best way to not make a mistake typing.
Keyboard short cuts 
Cut:    Highlight text or graphic  Press "Ctrl+X" key at the same time. 
Copy:  Highlight text or graphic  Press "Ctrl+C" key at the same time. 
Paste: Highlight text or graphic  Press "Ctrl+V" key at the same time. 
 

Things you will learn when making your Web Pages: 
You will use Netscape Composer to create your web pages from the templates located on your floppy disk. 
Netscape Composer is a WYSIWYG Web Page authoring program that allows you create a web page in a similar fashion to a how you use a word processor.
 
WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get
 
  • Pick a topic for your Web Quest and accompanying Lesson Plan.
  • Search for web resources for your web pages. Bookmark websites and save graphics.
  • Learn how Greg wants you to save HTML and graphic files to save time and promote efficiency. (See Web Page Creation Guide Lines in the section below.)
  • Learn how to save bookmarks and graphics and HTML files to the correct folders in your Save Here Folder on your desktop.
  • Learn how to back up your work from the Save Here Folder on your desktop to the Save Here Folder on your floppy disk.  Do this at the end of each session.

  • Learn how to open the templates from your floppy disk using Netscape Composer.
  • Learn how to make modifications to your Web Quest and Lesson Plan pages.
  • Learn how to save the changes you made to your floppy disk in the correct folder.

  • (Let's Review the difference between "Save" and "Save As") 
  • Learn how to make modifications to your web pages. 

  • This may include changing the text, font size, font style, color, adding graphics, and adding your e-mail address, etc. 
  • Learn how to preview the changes you have made.
  • Learn how to view and edit the HTML source code if necessary.

Guidelines that will make Greg's life easier: 
 
Greg will have to upload all the files to the Internet.  If you follow these guidelines, many problems can be avoided and we will have more fun!
 
 
  • When in doubt, always ask for help!
  • When giving a name to your Web Quest and Lesson Plan, keep it short and simple, and begin with a Capital letter and always end with .html 

  • For Example:  
    A Web Quest about Simple Machines: Machines.html 
    Accompanying Lesson Plan: Machines-L.html 
 
  • After have saved graphic to your Save Here Folder on the Desktop, Rename it putting a Capital letter with a hyphen in front of it. 

  • For Example:  
    elephant.jpg  will be renamed to A-elephant.jpg 
    Every participant will given a letter of the alphabet. 
  • Be sure that all the files that belong to your Web Quest are put in the Web Quest folder on floppy disk.
  • Be sure that all the files that belong to your Lesson Plan are put in the Lesson Plan folder on floppy disk.
  • Be sure to back up your work frequently.  Save your work from your Save Here Folder on the Desktop to  your Save Here Folder  on your floppy at the end of every morning and afternoon session.
